Accelerated Reader Parent Information

The Bossier Parish School System requires that students participate in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program.  Students are assigned a point range and goal after the AR STAR test is administered during the first few weeks of school.   At BMS, we require that students read at home, in Reading/Literature class, and in other classes as time allows.

The achievement of the AR goal is vital to the success of each student because this grade will be averaged as 10% of the total Reading/Literature grade for the nine weeks.  This can raise or lower the Reading/Literature grade significantly. Students must also attain an average comprehension score of at least 85% on AR tests taken to receive full points for comprehension.

We ask that you be an active partner in this program with your child and us.  Your child needs your help.  Please encourage him/her to read every day.  Please be aware of your child’s instructional level and his/her book choices.  Check to see if you think the book he/she is reading is a good choice.   Parents are able to check for AR quizzes available to the students at www.ARbookfind.com.  You may also check your student’s reading record from home by signing up with AR Home Connect through our school website.  Log on using your student’s username and password.  Tests may not be taken from home, but reading records (point totals, comprehension percentage, etc) may be checked.

Reading helps to increase your child’s vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills. Reading helps him/her become a better overall student.  In class, we are working on strategies to improve reading/thinking skills.  A great way for students to improve these vital learning areas is to PRACTICE!

Thank you for your assistance in this very important area of your child’s academic growth.

Sincerely,

BentonMiddle SchoolReading/Literature Teachers
